How do I choose between splice clamps and terminal anchor clamps?

Splice clamps join a broken conductor, terminal anchor clamps carry the full section tension, and crimping quality decides reliability

Short answer

Splice clamps (joint clamps) are used for joining a broken contact wire or messenger wire and for erection joints; the conductor section is the same on both sides, and the resistance and strength of the joint must not be lower than those of the conductor itself. Terminal anchor clamps are used at both ends of a tensioning section, carry the full section tension and connect to the anchoring device (balance weights or compensator), with the strength class matched to the breaking load of the conductor.

Selection points

Choose the size that matches the conductor type (CTA/CTM/CTS-120/150, JTM-70/95/120 and so on). Crimped types need the dedicated crimping tool and dies, and a tensile sample check is taken after crimping. The smoothness of the joint directly affects current collection — contact wire joints are a common source of hard spots, so after installation the joint is ground smooth and checked for any part standing proud of the running surface. Choose between crimped and bolted types (no crimping, easier for emergency repair) to suit the situation; on running lines the bolted type makes live-line replacement easier.
